We are planning to address severe shortage of space in Supreme Court : CJI DY Chandrachud

Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud said, We are planning to address the severe shortage of space in the Supreme Court by putting up a new annexe building.

He further added, asked the Public Works Department to draw up an initial blueprint of the building, and also constituted a Building Committee comprising of SC judges who will be his successors as CJI and bring diverse experiences.

The CJI said the PWD had already done its first drawing, and the judges had provided clear instructions to them.

The CJI said the primary focus has to be on providing adequate space for the most important stakeholders, including lawyers and litigants.

Further, the PWD has been told that since the bar is in dire need of more space, adequate facilities have to be provided for SCBA, SCAORA and the Women Lawyers Association, as he believes women require space of their own.

“Very often members of the Bar come to meet me. My problem is I can’t say no to any of their demands as that’s the lawyer within me, which is saying how justified these demands are. But then, over the last 5 months, there’s a CJI inside me who has an institutional perspective at heart. So there’s a conflict at times between me as a lawyer and as an institutional head,” the CJI said.
