The Central government on Thursday announced the transfer of Justice Atul Sreedharan from the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh to his parent court, the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
The transfer was carried out under Article 222(1) of the Constitution of India after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
An official notification confirming the transfer was issued by the Ministry of Law & Justice, Department of Justice.
"In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, as Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh and to direct him to assume charge of his office in the High Court of Madhya Pradesh," the notification said.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the repatriation of Justice Atul Sreedharan to his parent High Court, Madhya Pradesh, during a meeting held on March 6 this year.
Justice Sreedharan was initially transferred from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in April 2023 at his own request, citing his daughter's entry into legal practice in Madhya Pradesh. Now, he has been transferred back to Madhya Pradesh.
Born on May 24, 1966, Justice Sreedharan began his legal career in 1992 under the mentorship of Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium in Delhi. He practiced independently in Delhi from 1997 to 2000 before relocating to Indore in 2001, where he continued his legal practice at the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
He has served as counsel for both the State and Central governments before being appointed an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in April 2016. He was elevated to a permanent judgeship on March 17, 2018.
Justice Sreedharan was transferred to the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court on April 27, 2023, and took oath on May 10, 2023.
