Uttarakhand HC Stays Felling of 3,000+ Trees for Rishikesh-Bhaniyawala Road Widening

The Uttarakhand High Court has stayed the felling of over 3,000 trees for the widening of the Rishikesh-Bhaniyawala road.

The order was passed on Wednesday by a division bench comprising Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Ashish Naithani while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Dehradun resident Reenu Paul.

Advocate Abhijay Negi, representing the petitioner, argued that the road expansion could disrupt elephant corridors. The state government assured the court that measures would be taken to ensure unhindered movement of elephants. However, the bench directed the authorities to submit all necessary permissions related to the project.

This is not the first time the court has intervened in environmental concerns—previously, it took steps to protect the Shivalik Elephant Reserve in a similar case.
