The Supreme Court has sought responses on Tuesday from the National Medical Commission (NMC) and a government medical college in Madhya Pradesh regarding the complaint of some foreign medical graduates not being given stipends during their internship.
A bench comprising Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta considered the arguments presented by advocate Tanvi Dubey, representing five doctors who obtained degrees from foreign medical colleges. The bench emphasized that they should be treated similarly to those who have completed MBBS from Indian institutions.
The bench issued notices not only to the NMC and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College in Vidisha but also to the Madhya Pradesh Medical Council, besides setting the date for the hearing on March 11 regarding the petition filed by five, including Sajit S. L. from Thiruananthapuram.
During the brief hearing, advocate Tanvi Dubey argued that these students are being deprived of their rightful claims for monthly stipends, while the notification issued by the NMC states that they will be considered equivalent to Indian medical graduates.
