SC Collegium recommends appointment of advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as judge of Bombay High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the appointment of advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as a judge of the Bombay High Court.

As per the resolution dated July 18, the recommendation was made by the Bombay High Court Collegium on September 26, 2022.

Earlier, in May 2023, the Collegium deferred its decision on the recommendation and decided to seek a report of the then ACJ of the Bombay High Court in view of the issues the Department of Justice flagged.

The then ACJ of the High Court, after discussing the matter with his colleagues at the Aurangabad Bench, submitted the report on May 10, 2022.

According to the resolution, the Collegium considered the government's inputs in conjunction with the report of the then ACJ.

Three consultee judges of the Supreme Court, who had previously served at the High Court, were of the opinion that Deshpande was suitable for elevation. The resolution further stated that the High Court Collegium was well positioned to ascertain the lawyer's professional competence.

As of June 1, 2023, the Bombay High Court is operating with 63 judges against a sanctioned strength of 94, leaving a vacancy position of 31.
