President of India Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday inaugurated the new building of the Jharkhand High Court which is said to be the largest High Court in the Country.
The event was also attended by CJI DY Chandrachud, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
President, while delivering the address, advocated for a creche facility in the new building to encourage women to pursue legal profession whilst still taking care of their children. She also highlighted the condition of undertrial prisoners, noting that prisons were overcrowded and the root cause of the problem has to be addressed.
CJI Chandrachud also touched upon the aspect of delay in justice for undertrial prisoners & how it could lead to erosion of trust in the justice delivery system.
For the construction of this building, a tender was put out for the new 165-acre HC complex, and construction began in June 2015 with a 30-month deadline. Notwithstanding, after a long delay, the design was at last introduced on Wednesday. In terms of area, it is larger than any of the high courts and even the Supreme Court (22 acres). The building has been built at a cost of `550 crore, 500 CCTV cameras have been installed. The library has in excess of 5 lakh legal books for judges and other legal officials.
