Recently, the Central Government has informed the Supreme Court that the notification regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court will be issued shortly.

Case Brief -

A division bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia was hearing a petition filed by the Advocates Association of Bengaluru seeking contempt action against the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for not following the timeline established by the Court in a 2021 judgment for processing collegium proposals.

Additionally, the Court has listed a writ petition filed by the non-governmental organization (NGO) Common Cause, which addresses concerns about delays in judicial appointments, alongside the contempt petition.

During the proceedings today, the bench officially noted the Central Government's commitment that the appointment of Justice Siddharth Mridul will be formally announced soon.

To this, Justice Kaul said, "Regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice for a high court, which has been pending for an extended period, especially in a sensitive state, it has been reported that the necessary paperwork has been approved, and the official notification will be released shortly."
