Manipur HC appoints first ST judge: Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui takes the bench

The Central government has officially announced the appointment of Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui, a judicial officer, as a judge in the Manipur High Court. The development was shared by Union Minister of State, Arjun Ram Meghwal, through a tweet.

Golmei Kabui's appointment marks a historic moment, as she will become the first female judge from a scheduled tribe community to serve in the Manipur High Court.

In January of this year, the Supreme Court collegium put forth the names of judicial officers Aribam Guneshwar Sharma and Kabui for elevation as judges in the Manipur High Court. Currently, the High Court has an approved strength of 5 judges, but it is operating with only 3 judges. Additionally, there is no permanent Chief Justice in place at this time.
