Law ministry open to examine Advocates Protection Act: Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal

Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, stated on Thursday that the ministry was open to look into a law to protect advocates.

The legal community was also asked by Meghwal to recognize its "unsung heroes" who made contributions to the welfare of society without seeking anything in return.

Speaking at a ceremony for his recognition by the Bar Council of India (BCI), the Minister of State was being honored. Throughout his address, he said.

“Can we identify 100 such lawyers who don’t feature in the pages of the history books and felicitate them? You’ll find many of them. Perhaps you’ll find their families. Let’s find them and felicitate them,” he said.

He also exhorted the bar's members to host a workshop in Dr. BR Ambedkar's honor. He emphasized that Ambedkar, who served as the Indian Constitution's architect, was admitted to the bar in 1923, marking a century since that event.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) hosted a ceremony to honor the Minister of State. He was speaking at the event. During his remarks, he said:

“With the responsibility of the Law Ministry entrusted upon me, I will listen to your grievances."

Additionally, he invited bar members to host a workshop in Dr. BR Ambedkar's honor. He emphasized that Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, was admitted to the bar in 1923, which will be commemorated in 2023.

If the BCI takes the initiative to organize such a workshop, the Ministry of Culture, of which Meghwal is also a Minister of State, would extend its help, he added.

BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra noted problems with infrastructure and the welfare of advocates during the event, among other things.

Meghwal said that the Law Ministry would also look into the issue of the lack of chambers, especially for attorneys practicing in the district courts, in response to concerns expressed by Mishra and others at the event.

The ceremony was attended by bar association members from 20 different states.
