Justice Dipankar Datta to take oath tomorrow morning as Judge, Supreme Court of India

Justice Dipankar Gupta, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court will take oath as Judge of the Supreme Court of India tomorrow at 10:30 He would be administered oath by the Chief Justice of India in Court No.1 of the Supreme Court.

Presently the strength of the Supreme Court is 27 and on the oath of Justice Dipankar Datta, it will rise to 28. The name of Justice Datta was proposed by the collegium headed by the then Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit.

Justice Datta was born on 09.02.1965. He was son of late Salil Kumar Datta, a former Judge of the High Court at Calcutta, and brother-in-law of Justice Amitava Roy, former Judge of the Supreme Court.

He was awarded an LL.B. degree by the University of Calcutta in 1989. He was enrolled as an Advocate on November 16, 1989. He practiced mainly in the High Court at Calcutta, as well as in the Supreme Court of India and other High Courts in Constitutional and Civil matters.

He was Junior Standing Counsel for the State of West Bengal from May 16, 2002, to January 16, 2004. He was Counsel for the Union of India since 1998. Appeared for a number of educational authorities and institutions including the University of Calcutta, W.B. School Service Commission, and W.B. Board of Secondary Education.

He was Guest Lecturer on Constitutional Law of India in the University College of Law, University of Calcutta, from 1996-97 to 1999-2000.

Justice Datta would take oath as Judge, Supreme Court of India tomorrow and he will have his tenure till 08.02.2030.
