The Supreme Court on Tuesday scheduled the hearing for April 15 in a suo motu case concerning the Lokpal’s order on complaints against sitting High Court judges.
A special three-judge bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai, Surya Kant, and Abhay S. Oka has appointed senior advocate Ranjit Kumar as amicus curiae to assist the court in the matter.
The proceedings stem from the Lokpal’s January 27 order, which the Supreme Court had stayed on February 20, calling it "very, very disturbing" as it raised concerns about judicial independence. The court had also sought responses from the center, the Lokpal registrar, and the complainant, who had filed grievances against a sitting High Court judge.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, asserted that a High Court judge does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013.
The Lokpal’s order in question pertained to two complaints filed against a sitting additional judge of a High Court.
