Indian Army petitioned in SC for Special Selection Board to consider 246 female officers for promotion to the rank of Colonel

The Indian Army informed the Supreme Court's bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha on December 13 that it would hold a Special Selection Board to consider 246 of its female officers for promotions to higher ranks. Senior Advocate R Balasubramanian, representing the Indian Army, informed the Court that on January 9, 2023, approximately 246 female officers will be considered for promotion. The Court ordered that the Board's findings be presented to it and scheduled a hearing for January 30, 2023.

The court was hearing a petition from 34 Army female officers who claimed that despite the Court's directions in the Babita Puniya decision, promotion of female officers was not being implemented. According to the petition, which was filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar, it was completely unjustified, arbitrary, and an insult to senior female officers that their promotions were withheld while the respondents promoted junior male officers to Colonel rank.

The applicants asked for an immediate Selection Board to promote qualified female officers on par with their male counterparts. They pointed out that their junior male counterparts were being taken into account for promotion ahead of them and requested that the process be postponed.
