The Gujarat High Court directed the state government to submit an action taken report in the case of the deaths of students and teachers in the recent boat accident.
On January 8, 12 students and two teachers were killed when their boat capsized in Motnath Lake, located in the Harni area of Vadodara. During this time, 18 students and two teachers were saved. The students had come for a picnic.
Taking suo motu cognizance of the incident, Chief Justice Sunita Aggarwal said that safety norms were completely violated at the time of the accident. The children were not even provided with life jackets while boarding the boat. The court said,
''We direct the Secretary of the State Home Department to submit the action taken report in the case along with the affidavit of the Gazetted Officer of the Home Department, Government of Gujarat by the next due date. The court fixed January 29 for the next hearing.''
The boat accident case in Vadodara, Gujarat has reached the Supreme Court. The matter has been investigated in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Morbi Bridge Accident Victims Association.
In the petition, the union said that in the last decade, hundreds of people have died and thousands have been injured in 11 incidents of bridge collapse and 12 boat capsizing. The union demanded the formation of an expert committee to prevent similar accidents from happening across the country.
