Delhi mayor Shelly Oberoi granted travel clearance; High Court disposes plea

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi reported to the Delhi High Court on Wednesday that she has received political clearance from the Union Government to travel to Brisbane for a conference.

On Tuesday, the mayor took her case to the High Court, contesting the rejection of her clearance request. Oberoi's legal representative brought up the issue with the Chief Justice's bench and requested an expedited hearing. As a result, the case was scheduled before a single bench.

Justice Subramonium Prasad acknowledged that the issue was no longer relevant once he was informed about the clearance, and subsequently, he dismissed the plea.

Oberoi had requested authorization to participate in the 2023 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayor's Forum scheduled to occur in Brisbane from October 11 to 13. She had submitted a proposal concerning the matter to the Municipal Commissioner of Delhi (MCD) on June 15th. The Commissioner then forwarded the document to the Secretary of Urban Development, who subsequently passed it on to the Chief Secretary. Following this, the Urban Development Minister, Saurabh Bhardwaj, sent the proposal to the Chief Minister's office. From there, the file was transferred to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) on September 22nd. Although the MEA granted clearance to an IAS officer scheduled to accompany Oberoi, it did not provide clearance for her. As a result, she took the matter to the High Court.
