The Delhi High Court directed the Delhi government to submit information on action taken in accordance with a report by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the violence at Jamia Millia Islamia following protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December 2019.
The court asked the Delhi government to file a report regarding compensation for the victims.
Further, the Court questioned the police about whether any action was taken against the policemen who used excessive force on the students.
The court passed the said order while hearing a batch of petitions related to the incident of alleged police brutality on students.
A bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Manoj Jain asked the Delhi Police counsel whether you (police personnel) were able to identify him.
On this, the advocate appearing on behalf of the police sought time from the court and argued that the petitions were not hearable. It is also said that the authority concerned with the distribution of compensation is the Delhi government. Various petitions filed in the court have sought directions to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Commission of Inquiry (CoI) or fact-finding committee, medical treatment, compensation, and an FIR against the guilty police officers.
