Delhi court summons Bajrang Punia on September 6 in criminal defamation complaint

Yesterday, Delhi court summoned wrestler Bajrang Punia on September 6 in a criminal defamation complaint filed against him by wrestling coach Naresh Dahiya. The bench of Metropolitan Magistrate Yashdeep Chahal orders Bajrang Punia to appear before the court on 6th September, holding he is of the “prima facie” view that all the ingredients of defamation were made out.

“On a consideration of the complaint, supporting documents and pre-summoning evidence, I am of the prima facie view that all the ingredients of defamation are made out.

“In view of the same, let accused, namely, Bajrang Punia be summoned for the commission of offence punishable under Section 499 read with Section 500 (both dealing with criminal defamation) of the IPC,” the judge said.

In this matter, the claimed that Punia made defamatory remarks against Dahiya in a press conference held on May 10 at Jantar Mantar during a protest against alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers by the outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.

Earlier, the Top wrestlers of India, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia have moved the Supreme Court seeking FIR against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over alleged sexual harassment issue.

They resumed their protest nearly after three months at Delhi's Jantar Mantar against the WFI chief and other coaches for allegedly sexually assaulting women wrestlers.

Meanwhile, the State Police has sought a report from the investigating committee that was set up by the Union sports ministry to probe the allegations, according to a top official.

A total of seven complaints have been received against the WFI chief.

"As part of the inquiry, we have sought a report from the probe committee set up by Sports Ministry to look into the allegations of sexual harassment allegations levelled against WFI chief," the top official said.
