The Central Government has notified the transfer of Justice VM Velumani from Madras High Court to Calcutta High Court. A notification issued in this regard reads thus:
"In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution, the President, after consultation with The Chief Justice of India is pleased to transfer Justice VM Velumani, judge of Madras High Cour, as a judge of the Calcutta High Court"
The Supreme Court Collegium had first proposed her transfer to Calcutta High Court in September 2022. However, she made a request to retain her at Madras High Court. Justice Velumani also sought an alternate transfer to a North Eastern State, preferably Manipur or Tripura, on the ground that she would then be able to retain her official accommodation at Chennai.
However, rejecting her request, her name was again proposed for transfer to Calcutta High Court in March this year.
