On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court granted permission to the Kalighat Bahumukhi Seva Samiti to livestream the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. Additionally, the court allowed them to perform religious rituals, including puja and kirtan, at Deshpran Sasmal Park in South Kolkata.
The single-headed bench of Justice Jay Sengupta, at the Calcutta High Court, issued the order in response to a petition filed by the Kalighat Bahumukhi Seva Samiti. The petition was filed after objections from state authorities regarding the live broadcast of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir inauguration event.
The BJP-backed outfit had further requested authorization to conduct religious ceremonies such as Puja and Kirtan, as well as distribute Prasad. They sought permission to construct a temporary stage for these activities.
The Court granted approval for these events to take place between 9 AM and 6 PM, with the condition that the number of participants does not exceed sixty.
The Court stated in its order, "The petitioner is thus allowed to conduct the event on January 22, from 9 am to 6 pm, utilizing approximately half of the Deshpran Sasmal Park. Participation in the program should not exceed 60 individuals. The police authorities are instructed to provide assistance as needed. The petitioner must adhere to the relevant regulations concerning the use of sound equipment and other applicable laws."
In making this decision, the Court dismissed a proposal from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to restrict the event to a time frame of 10 AM to 2 PM. The Court observed that both opposing parties had at least reached a consensus on the venue for the event.
The Samiti initially intended to host the event at Nepal Bhattacharjee Street in South Kolkata, but the State authorities raised objections. Subsequently, a mutual agreement was reached between both parties, determining that the event could take place at Deshpran Sasmal Park, also located in South Kolkata.
The Court also specified that after the conclusion of the program, the Samiti is required to clean the area, ensuring that normal activities can promptly resume in that space.
Advocate Tarunjyoti Tewari appeared for the Kalighat Bahumukhi Seva Samiti.
Senior counsel Amitesh Banerjee along with advocates Rudrajit Sarkar and Suddhadev Adak represented the State.
