Today, Varanasi district court awarded permission for Hindus to conduct prayers within the 'Vyas Ka Tekhana' section of the Gyanvapi mosque complex.
District Judge Ajay Krishna Vishwesha additionally instructed the District Magistrate to assume control of the basement and guarantee the initiation of religious rituals within the next seven days.
The court granted the privilege for a priest's relative to perform religious rites in the cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque, as conveyed by Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, who represented the Hindu party.
"Puja will start within seven days. Everyone will have the right to perform puja... Hindu side allowed to offer prayers at ‘Vyas Ka Tekhana’. The District Administration will have to make arrangements within 7 days,” Mr. Jain said.
The Hindu party contended that worship practices were previously carried out in the basement by Somenath Vyas and his family until November 1993. They asserted that the government at that time, under the leadership of Mulayam Singh Yadav, had subsequently banned religious activities in that area after November 1993.
Simultaneously, a mosque committee has declared its intention to contest the verdict by approaching the Allahabad High Court. The mosque comprises four cellars, with one still under the ownership of the Vyas family, former residents of the premises.
Vyas, asserting his status as a hereditary priest, had filed a petition seeking permission to enter the tahkhana and resume religious ceremonies.
