Three Supreme Court judges took Oath Today, SC back to its Full Strength

Today, Justices Satish Chandra Sharma, Augustine George Masih, and Sandeep Mehta took oath as judges of the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath to them at a ceremony held in the Additional Complex of the Supreme Court today at 4.15 PM.

Recently, On November 6, the Chief Justice of India, along with a 5-member Supreme Court collegium, recommended the elevation of individuals to the Central Government. 

With the new appointments, the Supreme Court is back to its full strength of 34 judges

Prior to their elevation, Justices Sharma, Justice Augustine George Masih and Justice Sandeep Mehta served as Chief Justices of the High Courts of Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gauhati, respectively, before becoming judges of the Supreme Court. Justices Satish Chandra Sharma, Augustine George Masih, and Sandeep Mehta have their roots in the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, and Rajasthan, respectively.

The top court currently has 31 judges, including the Chief Justice and 30 puisne judges.

Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma on his elevation to the Supreme Court of India bid a heartfelt farewell to the Delhi High Court.  Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma said ''Consistent goal was to deliver justice to litigants and expressed satisfaction with the milestones achieved during his judicial journey.''

While recommending the name of Justice Augustine George Masih the collegium highlighted that he ranked seventh in overall seniority but held the top position in the context of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which serves as the parent high court for two other judges on the Supreme Court bench.

The collegium resolution highlights that Justice Sandeep Mehta holds the twenty-third position in the overall seniority list but is the most senior among judges originating from the Rajasthan High Court.
