Tamil Nadu's Advocate General R Shunmugasundaram to Resign, Transitioning Back to Private Legal Practice

R. Shunmugasundaram, the Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, plans to step down from his position to re-enter private practice.

The former Rajya Sabha Member stated in a release, 'I will personally meet the Chief Minister today and submit my resignation papers.''

Shunmugasundaram assumed the role of Advocate General in May 2021, coinciding with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) coming to power in the state. With an illustrious legal career spanning over four decades, he has played a pivotal role in several high-profile cases, earning recognition for his contributions to the legal field.

Possessing more than four decades of experience at the Bar, Shunmugasundaram is prominently recognized for his role as the lawyer who helped substantiate the case of disproportionate assets against former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Born in Tirunelveli in October 1953, Shunmugasundaram belongs to a lineage of lawyers, being a second-generation legal professional. He began his career as a junior under the mentorship of the renowned criminal lawyer N. Natarajan. His father, S. Rajagopal, served as a public prosecutor and special prosecutor for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Madurai.

Throughout his career, Shunmugasundaram has been involved in various high-profile cases, showcasing his legal acumen and dedication to justice. He served as a counsel for Tamil Nadu before the Justice MC Jain Commission, which investigated the assassination of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. Additionally, he acted as amicus curiae in the London Hotel case against Jayalalithaa, demonstrating his commitment to upholding the principles of justice.

As he prepares to step down from the position of Advocate General, Shunmugasundaram leaves behind a legacy of legal prowess and commitment to public service.
