The Supreme Court postponed the petition filed by the government of Andhra Pradesh on December 16 in order to list it in the second week of January. The petition sought a fair, equitable, and prompt division of the assets and liabilities of the former State of Andhra Pradesh between the States of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in accordance with the Apportionment made under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
Before a court of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and MM Sundresh today, the state government's advocate noted that this was an unusual circumstance because the Act, which clearly allots everything, was brought in the year 2014. He also requested the court today to decide the matter quickly. The bench mentioned that the highest court was already hearing a number of cases that were comparable to this one.
The court ordered the state to serve early copies of the petition on both the federal government and the state of Telangana. The next hearing on the subject is scheduled for the second week of January 2023.
It should be noted that the Andhra Pradesh government has petitioned the Supreme Court, arguing that none of the institutions listed in Schedule IX (91 institutions), Schedule X (142 institutions), or Institutions Not Mentioned in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014 (12 institutions) have been distributed among the States as a result of their reorganisation in 2014.
According to the petition, the institution was required to distribute around Rs. 1,42,601 crores in fixed assets. The petition further claimed that Telangana will profit from the non-division of assets because Hyderabad, the state of Telangana's capital city, holds 91% of those assets.
The petition also claims that the organisations it names carry out a number of fundamental and important duties, including those related to agriculture, dairy development, education, medical care, minority and underprivileged class development, industrial development, infrastructure development, social security, etc.
