Supreme Court refuses to entertain plea against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Kiren Rijiju

Today, the Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju for their remarks on the judiciary and the Collegium system for the appointment of judges.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Ahsanuddin Amanullah stated that they believe the view of the High Court is correct and that the Supreme Court is broad enough to deal with any inappropriate statements made by authorities.

The Bombay Lawyers Association (BLA) had filed a plea in the Supreme Court against Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar over their remarks on the judiciary and the collegium system for the appointment of judges. Earlier, the Bombay High Court on February 9 had dismissed.

The appeal was filed against a ruling made earlier this year by the Bombay High Court, regarding public remarks made by Dhankhar and Rijiju against the Collegium, judiciary and Supreme Court.

The Association had contended that the remarks were a “frontal attack” on the judiciary, without recourse, in derogatory language.

The High Court had said that statements made by individuals cannot erode the credibility of the Supreme Court.
