Supreme Court not impressive in issues like Kashmir and Electoral Bonds: Ex-Supreme Court Judge Gopal Gowda

While speaking at a national convention at Krishna Menon Bhawan on Saturday, Justice Gopal Gowda, Former Judge, of the Supreme Court of India made strenuous remakes against the Supreme Court for its recent decisions on various controversial issues.

The convention was also attended by Rekha Sharma, Former Judge, Delhi High Court, Sr. Adv. Indira Jaisingh, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, Raju Ramchandran and PV Surendranath.

Justice Gowda, known for his socialist approach and judgment, said that "Supreme Court's conduct has not been impressive when freedom of speech was curtailed in Jammu & Kashmir. Electoral bonds cases not taken up. You are not examining these issues! Political parties that d not get the money are not able to compete with those. this is very,  very bad that Supreme Court is not taking up this matter."

While speaking on other issues Justice Gowda said, "Before 2014, the Supreme Court was not hesitant in going against the executive in matters involving high political stakes; for example cancellation of the 2G licence and the coal-gate case. The Court passed oral remarks. including the famous "CBI is caged parrot" remark. Judiciary was seen as a crusader against corruption. After 2014, the Supreme Court presented a weaker self. The verdict in the politically-charged case, Bhima-Koregaon, Rafale, Aadhar, have invited lots of criticism from the public."

On the issue of the collegium system Justice Gowda said "To take the collegium system away, in 2016 a Bill was introduced. I am not saying it is perfect, I have my reservations. But when it is in practice, the judgment...is binding on all."
