The Supreme Court on Monday observed that sports associations in India are struggling with various issues.
This remark was made by a bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh while hearing a plea filed by the Maharashtra Wrestling Association.
"All these sports associations, there is nothing like sports in them. All are ailing bodies, we do not know they are grappling for what," the Court remarked during a brief hearing of the case.
The Supreme Court's observation comes at a time when multiple cases concerning the management of various sports bodies are pending before both High Courts and the apex court.
The Maharashtra Wrestling Association has approached the Supreme Court, challenging a Bombay High Court judgment that dismissed its plea against de-affiliation by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). A single-judge bench of the High Court had deemed the plea non-maintainable but granted liberty to approach the appropriate forum.
On January 15, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Union of India and other respondents in response to the association's petition. However, during today's hearing, the matter was adjourned as no counsel appeared for the petitioner. Meanwhile, the respondents' counsel argued that the petitioner had moved the Supreme Court directly without first exhausting the appellate remedy in the High Court.
