Supreme Court dismisses PIL to change name of Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda

The Supreme Court dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition on Friday that sought to change the names of Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda. Onkar Sharma, a senior auditor at a Punjab National Bank branch in Mumbai, filed the petition. He stated that both Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda were national banks that had achieved international status to some extent. However, because of the names, many people, particularly in rural areas, were unsure whether these banks were regional or national/international.

The petition is frivolous, according to a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli. "Plea is frivolous and it is beyond judicial realm as it is a matter of policy, Dismissed," the Court ordered.

The bench was unimpressed by the prayers. "What? and name it what? You also want to change the cricket team of Baroda or Bank of Baroda. It is not upto us or our remit to change name of banks," CJI Chandrachud remarked. Following that, the Court dismissed the plea.

Case title: Onkar Sharma v. Union of India & Anr.
