The Calcutta High Court has lifted the stay order on the recruitment of civil judges who qualified for the West Bengal Judicial Services Exam, 2022.
The bench of Justice Arindam Mukherjee rejects multiple petitions challenging the conduct of the exams.
The recruitment process had remained stalled due to the pending litigation, preventing the appointment of any civil judges in West Bengal since 2022. Despite successfully clearing the preliminary exam, mains exam, and interview, the selected candidates were left in uncertainty due to the non-appointment.
With the stay order now lifted, the long-awaited appointments of civil judges can proceed, easing the burden on the state's judicial system.
The preliminary examination for the 2022 judicial services batch was conducted in March 2023, followed by the mains exam in May 2023 and interviews in April 2024.
Although the Public Service Commission (PSC) published the final list of selected candidates in May 2024, appointments were delayed due to writ petitions filed before the High Court, questioning the examination process. The most recent stay order had been issued by the High Court on December 16, 2024.
