The Supreme Court on Monday directed Preeti Chandra, wife of former Unitech promoter Sanjay Chandra, accused in the money laundering case, to submit her passport to the Embassy of the Dominican Republic to give up her citizenship of the Caribbean country.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate before a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Manoj Mishra, said that Preeti Chandra has applied for Indian citizenship.
The court noted the law officer's submissions that Chandra's passport issued by the Dominican Republic was deposited with ED officials probing the money laundering case. The bench ordered that she would take her passport and submit the passport to the Embassy of the Dominican Republic for the sole purpose of renouncing her citizenship of the Caribbean country.
However, the bench refused to modify the bail condition of not leaving the National Capital Region (NCR) without the permission of the court. Earlier, the top court had asked the Center to convey its stand on Preeti Chandra's proposal to give up her Dominican Republic citizenship.
