Journalist Siddiqui Kappan, arrested on several charges including inciting the public after the Hathras incident in Uttar Pradesh, is to be released from jail today. On December 23, Siddiqui Kappan was granted bail in Ed's money laundering case from the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. He is getting released today after spending 2 years, 3 months and 26 days in jail.
On 5 October 2020, four people including Siddique Kappan were arrested from Mathura toll plaza. The UP police had said that Siddiqui Kappan has a connection with the Popular front of India and the four accused were planning to spread violence in Hathras.
The Supreme Court granted conditional bail to Kappan. Kappan will have to stay in Delhi for the next 6 weeks after his release from the Uttar Pradesh jail, after which he will be able to go to Kerala. Apart from this, every Monday he will have to attend the police station, as well as surrender his passport.
He was booked under various sections of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, IT Act and Indian Penal Code. At that time Kappan was allegedly going to cover the incident of gangrape and murder of Hathras girl. After getting relief from the Supreme Court, Kappan was also allowed to apply for bail in the proceedings initiated against him under money laundering.
Kappan was jailed under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 295A (hurting religious feelings), 124A (sedition), 120B (conspiracy), UAPA.
