Today, the Supreme Court while hearing the case of disqualification of rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, the Supreme Court gave the last chance to Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar to give a time line for taking a decision in the case of disqualification of Shiv Sena MLAs. The top court said that the disqualification petitions should be decided quickly.
Taking note of the argument of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that he should personally talk to the Speaker during the Dussehra holidays and then apprise us of the situation. The court has asked the Speaker to tell by October 30 that Speaker Rahul Narvekar will take a decision on the disqualification of MLAs.
On the request of Solicitor General Mehta, the court has given Speaker Rahul Narvekar one more chance.
The Supreme Court had expressed displeasure on this.
The CJI-led bench said, “We are not satisfied with the time line. The Solicitor General has informed that during the Dussehra holidays he will personally interact with the Speaker to give a concrete indication of the modalities. The bench also included Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra. Now the next hearing of the case will be on October 30.
The top court had earlier strongly reprimanded the Speaker for delaying the decision on the petitions filed by the Uddhav Thackeray faction seeking disqualification of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and several MLAs of his faction. Also, the court had said that the Speaker cannot reject the orders of the Supreme Court. Similar disqualification petitions have been filed by the Shinde faction against the MPs of the Thackeray faction.
