Sharjeel Imam's Sedition Case Bail Plea to be Decided by February 17 : Delhi HC

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court directed the trial court to render a decision on Sharjeel Imam's statutory bail plea in the Sedition case by February 17.

The order was issued by a bench comprising Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain as they addressed the bail plea submitted by Sharjeel Imam.

Imam argues that he has served four years in custody, which is within the maximum seven-year sentence, making him eligible for statutory bail.

The Bench further stated that in the event of Imam being denied bail, he has the option to file a new appeal in the High Court. The case revolves around Imam's alleged provocative speeches at Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Milia Islamia in Delhi during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizenship (NRC).

He was apprehended in connection with the case on January 28, 2020. In July 2022, the trial court dismissed his request for interim bail in this matter. His appeal challenging the order that framed Sedition and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) charges against him in the case is scheduled to be heard by the High Court on March 8.
