The Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra, has strongly slams the National Medical Commission (NMC) for not giving stripined to the candidates doing MBBS internship. The Supreme Court bench, while reprimanding the NMC in the interest of MBBS trainees, said, “What is the National Medical Commission doing? These young doctors are working 16 to 20 hours a day, it is like bonded labour.”
The Supreme Court has criticized the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 70 percent of the institutions in the country which are not giving the fixed stipend to the candidates doing their internship. The Supreme Court said that at the time of admission, these institutions take huge donations to provide seats but when it comes to giving allowances, they lag behind.
The Supreme Court raised concerns about private medical colleges that frequently demand substantial donations or capitation fees during student admissions. It questioned the effectiveness of the National Medical Commission (NMC) in its regulatory role, especially in ensuring that these colleges fulfill their responsibility of providing stipends to MBBS interns.
The NMC's representative requested time to gather the necessary information and report back to the panel, a request that was granted.
On September 15, the court had directed the National Medical Commission (NMC), the highest authority overseeing medical education in the nation, to launch an investigation into allegations that 70 percent of medical colleges were neglecting their obligation to provide stipends to MBBS interns.
