Recently, the Supreme Court, on October 31, directs the National Law University, Jodhpur, to provide a progress report concerning the regularization of its faculty within a two-month period. This issue pertains to the University's practice of primarily employing teachers on a contractual basis. Earlier, the Court expressed concerned about the University's heavy reliance on contractual staff.
The matter was placed before the Bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia.
The Supreme Court issued this directive after the Bench was informed by the University that a new Vice Chancellor has assumed control of the administration, and they have devised a plan to establish a regular staff. Senior advocate Dhurv Mehta represented the University in this matter.
Earlier, the Court observed that the University did not have a Vice Chancellor, and the Registrar was also employed on a contractual basis. The Court also raised significant concerns about the University's heavy reliance on contract teachers
Nevertheless, the Bench expressed its preference for the National Law University to rectify the situation independently rather than having the Court intervene. Consequently, in the current order, the Court requested the progress report and also noted that there is no harm in evaluating the mentioned issue in light of the ongoing reform measures.
