SC remembers its first woman Judge M. Fatima Beevi

The First woman judge of the Supreme Court of India Justice Fatima Beevi recently passed away on 22nd November, 2023. The Full Court Reference was held in the memory of Late Hon’ble Justice Fathima Beevi, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 10:30 A.M in the Supreme Court.

All the Judges of the Supreme Court and members of the Bar were present in Court Room No.1 of the Supreme Court to pay tribute to her.

M. Fathima Beevi was born on 30 April 1927 at Pathanamthitta in the Kingdom of Travancore. She was appointed to the apex Court in 1989, she became the first female judge to be a part of the Supreme Court of India, and the first Muslim woman judge to be appointed to any of the higher judiciaries in India. She retired in 1992. After retirement, she also served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission and later served as the Governor of the state of Tamil Nadu from 1997 to 2001.

CJI said that she was a path-breaking individual. She was a woman of many firsts. She rendered a number of notable judgments.

She was honoured with the Kerala Prabha Award in 2023, the second-highest honour of the Government of Kerala.
