SC Rejects ED's Petition, Upholds Bail for Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in Land Scam Case

The Supreme Court today rejected the Enforcement Directorate's appeal against the bail granted to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in a money laundering case connected to an alleged land scam.

On June 28, the Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Hemant Soren, stating that the records did not show his "direct involvement" in the alleged scam. The Supreme Court later concurred with this view, finding that the Jharkhand High Court's judgment was "very well reasoned."

"We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order," the bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan said.

The Enforcement Directorate arrested Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Hemant Soren on January 31 on charges of money laundering. The ED alleges that he orchestrated a scheme involving fictitious transactions and forged documents to acquire 8.86 acres of land in Ranchi, valued in the crores. Mr. Soren has consistently denied the charges against him and has claimed that his arrest—made just weeks before the Lok Sabha elections—is a ploy by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to undermine the opposition.

Earlier this month, he was re-sworn in as Chief Minister of Jharkhand, marking the end of a five-month political journey that began in January when he resigned just minutes before his arrest.
