SC issues notice on Anand Giri's bail plea in the Mahant Narendra Giri suicide case

On December 9, a Supreme Court bench comprising of Justices A. S. Bopanna and Bela M. Trivedi issued notice on Anand Giri's bail plea in the case involving the alleged suicide of Mahant Narendra Giri. The court requested a response from the State of Uttar Pradesh and the Central Bureau of Investigation on Anand Giri's petition challenging the Allahabad High Court's order denying him bail.

The Court held that "Considering the facts, materials on record and other attending circumstances of the case, which are relevant for the purpose of deciding this bail application, submissions advanced on behalf of parties, the complicity of the applicant, gravity of the offence and severity of the punishment as well as possibility of tampering the evidence and winning over the witnesses as noted above, I do not find any good ground to grant bail to the applicant at this stage".

On September 20, 2021, Mahant Narendra Giri, the head of Shri Math "Baghambari Gaddi" in Prayagraj, was discovered dead inside the Math. An alleged suicide note was discovered in which Mahant Narendra Giri blamed Anand Giri, Adhay Prasad Tiwari, and Sandeep Tiwari for his death. An FIR was filed, and it was discovered that Mahant Narendra Giri had been disturbed for several months as a result of Anand Giri's actions. Narendra Giri allegedly used to complain that Anand Giri was constantly bothering and harassing him. Anand Giri surrendered in Saharanpur, and his statements were recorded, after which the other two accused were apprehended. Anand Giri sought bail before the trial court, but it was denied by the Special Judge (EC Act), Allahabad. An appeal was filed before the Allahabad High Court, which was also dismissed on the grounds that there was a proximate link between the unfortunate incident of Mahant Narendra Giri's suicide and the acts of the accused.
