On Friday, a Supreme Court Bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and AS Oka slammed a petitioner who sought 75 lakh in compensation from YouTube for distracting him while he studied. The Division bench described the petition as "atrocious," adding that the petitioner could have chosen not to watch the advertisements.
"One of the most atrocious petitions filed by the petitioner stated that while he was preparing for MP Police exams, he subscribed to YouTube where there were sexual advertisements. He sought notice to YouTube and a ban on nudity in ads and Rs 75 lakh compensation. If you do not like the ad, do not watch it. Why he watched the ad is his his prerogative. Such petitions are a waste of judicial time,"
The Bench then reduced the costs to ₹25,000, to be deposited with the Supreme Court's Mediation Centre. It said, "Aapko lagta hain aisi betuki petitions file kar sakte hain. Nahi pay karenge toh recovery karenge ab, (You think you can file such senseless petitions. Recovery will be done if you don't pay)."
The petitioner claimed that sexually explicit advertisements on YouTube caused him to fail the Madhya Pradesh Police exam.
