Today, the Supreme Court ordered to extend the interim medical bail previously awarded to Satyendar Jain, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi health minister, until January 8, 2024.
A division bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma passed the order after examining the medical documents of Jain.
Earlier this year, on May 26, the Supreme Court initially granted medical bail to Jail, which has been consistently extended since then up to the present date. The bench was addressing the bail plea of the former Delhi Health Minister concerning the ongoing money-laundering case against him.
Jain was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in May 2022 and spent a year in jail before securing interim bail based on medical reasons. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had initially filed a case against Jain u/s 13(2) along with 13(e) (related to disproportionate assets) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The case was initiated based on the accusation that Jain had acquired movable properties under different individuals' names from 2015 to 2017, lacking satisfactory explanations for their procurement. Subsequently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) further alleged that multiple companies, purportedly owned and managed by Jain, received entries totaling ₹4.81 crore from shell companies.
These transactions involved cash transfers to Kolkata-based entry operators via a hawala route.
Following these allegations, Jain was subsequently arrested in connection with the case.
