In a noteworthy development, the Supreme Court declared on Tuesday that the ban on the sale and use of firecrackers extends beyond just Delhi-NCR and encompasses the entire nation. The apex court made this statement in response to a plea addressing the alarming surge in pollution levels in Udaipur, deteriorating air quality indexes, and the absence of clear regulations to address noise pollution levels.
It's worth mentioning that the Supreme Court had previously declined to lift the ban on the sale of firecrackers due to their contribution to the air pollution crisis. While upholding the ban, the Supreme Court emphasized that "reducing pollution is not solely the responsibility of the court."
The top court further stated, "There is a misconception that addressing pollution is solely the responsibility of the courts. Instead, it is a collective duty that everyone shares."
The Supreme Court also strongly criticized the Punjab government for its approach to stubble burning, emphasizing that continuous political disputes should not be the norm regarding this issue.
The Supreme Court has issued a directive to the Rajasthan government and other state governments, urging them to adhere to its previous orders concerning the use of firecrackers during the festive season. The Supreme Court specifically instructed the Rajasthan government to implement necessary measures to reduce air pollution, particularly during festivals, emphasizing that managing pollution is a collective responsibility that everyone must fulfill.
