SC denies urgent hearing on plea highlighting "Low Female Representation in Designation as Senior Advocate"

On Wednesday, the bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha heard a plea seeking the Supreme Court of India's intervention in Senior Advocate designations in the Madras High Court due to low representation of women in the posts. The bench refused to grant the matter an urgent listing, stating that such matters did not require out-of-turn intervention from the Supreme Court of India. CJI Chandrachud stated orally-

"We don't even have a petition. What are we supposed to do? There has to be some discipline. As a CJI, we can intervene without a petition on mentioning if somebody has been wrongfully detained or is likely to lose their personal liberty. But this issue is pertaining to the designation of some senior counsel at Madras. We cannot intervene like this."

While mentioning the issue, the counsel stated that only three women were being considered for the position of Senior Advocate in the Madras High Court. In context, the Madras High Court is set to make a final decision on the 81 names of lawyers shortlisted by the Permanent Committee headed by Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court T Raja to be designated as Senior Advocates. The Permanent Committee had approved 149 eligible applicants out of a total of 175 applications. Three female lawyers were included on the list: Advocates AL Ganthimathi, Dakshayani Reddy, and Narmadha Sampath.
