SC Collegium recommends Justice Sandeep Mehta for CJ of Gauhati High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and K.M. Joseph has recommended name of Justice Sandeep Mehta for appointment as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.

Justice Sandeep Mehta is the senior most judge of the Rajasthan High Court. The Collegium recommendation says that "Mr. Justice Sandeep Mehta, Judge, Rajasthan High Court, was appointed on 30 May 2011 and is due to retire on 10 January 2025. The Rajasthan High Court is unrepresented among the Chief Justices of the High Courts."

Justice Mehta has practised in Trial Courts, High Court and Supreme Court. He remained Counsel for Commission in 3 Judicial Enquiry Commissions headed by the Retired as well as Sitting Hon'ble Judges of High Court. He also remained Member, Bar Council of Raj. from 2003 to 2009 & 2009 till the date of elevation. He also remained Vice-Chairman of Bar Council of Raj. in 2004-2005. He ramained Chairman, Bar Council of Raj. in 2010.

The office of the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court has fallen vacant recently, consequent upon the retirement of Mr. Justice R.M. Chhaya. Therefore, an appointment to that office is required to be made.

The Collegium has previously resolved to appoint Mr. Justice K. Vinod Chandran as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. The Collegium vide a separate resolution has recommended the appointment of Mr. Justice K. Vinod Chandran as Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Patna.
