In a recent decision,, the Supreme Court has announced a temporary halt, effective immediately until December 15, 2023, to the practice of advocates submitting adjournment requests in advance through the circulation of letters.
The decision, communicated through a notification from the Registry, is aimed at maximizing case listings in the interest of litigants, particularly with the upcoming winter vacation in mind.
The notification emphasized the discontinuation of the circulation of adjournment slips or letters, redirecting individuals facing genuine difficulties to request adjournments directly before the relevant court. It is crucial to be aware that the court will be closing for winter vacations on December 15.
This shift in procedure comes in response to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud's expressed frustration with the prevalent practice of lawyers circulating adjournment letters, especially for cases listed after urgent mentions.
The Chief Justice, following a hearing of a Constitution Bench case, disclosed that a staggering 205 adjournment slips were submitted on the preceding day.
