The Supreme Court of India announced on Friday that it was looking into ways to limit the misuse of videos of court proceedings that were clipped and uploaded to the internet without context. While hearing a petition seeking proper implementation of live streaming of proceedings across High Courts, a Bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud revealed the same.
CJI Chandrachud stated that the copyright was in fact with the Supreme Court and that the Court was looking into the issue of clips on the internet that were often without context in order to maintain the sanctity of the judicial institution.
"Sometimes, these clips are taken out of context and I have to maintain the sanctity of the judicial institution as well. These 10 seconds clips etc often are without context. We are looking into it,"
Indira Jaising, a senior advocate, emphasised the importance of copyright regulations and social media monitoring. She informed the Court that clips of court hearings were being posted to the internet without context.
During the hearing, Jaising proposed using the Karnataka High Court model, in which the video conference link is included in the causelist and accessible from anywhere. The Court directed the Registry to investigate the suggestion and scheduled the case for the third week of January.
