Rhea Chakraborty Approaches Bombay HC Challenges CBI's Lookout Circular in SSR Case

Rhea Chakraborty approaches the Bombay High Court to challenge the lookout circular issued against her by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding its inquiry into actor Sushant Singh Rajput's demise.

On June 14, 2020, actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead in his suburban Bandra residence. Subsequently, in July of the same year, his father filed a complaint with the Bihar police, alleging that Rhea Chakraborty, then Rajput's girlfriend, and her family were involved in abetting his suicide.

In her plea, actor Chakraborty sought for the circular to be quashed and, in a separate application, sought temporary suspension of the circular as she has to travel abroad for a professional event.

During the hearing today, Chakraborty's lawyer, Abhinav Chandrachud, conveyed to a division bench headed by Justice A S Gadkari that nearly three years had elapsed since the CBI filed the FIR and issued the lookout circular. However, there has been a lack of substantial progress in the case during this time.

Chakraborty's counsel highlighted to the court that the CBI had never summoned her and hadn't filed any chargesheet against her. Meanwhile, Advocate Shriram Shirsat, representing the CBI, confirmed that the agency had submitted its affidavit in response to the plea.

Following this, the bench inquired whether Chakraborty had previously traveled abroad.

Chandrachud mentioned that after obtaining bail in the drugs case, Chakraborty had received authorization from the special NDPS court to travel overseas. However, her travel plans were hindered by the CBI's lookout circular. Subsequently, the bench scheduled the next hearing for December 20. It's important to note that actor Sushant Singh Rajput was discovered deceased in his suburban Bandra residence on June 14, 2020.

After the Mumbai police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and initiated an investigation, Sushant Singh Rajput's father lodged a complaint with the Bihar police in July 2020. His complaint alleged that Rhea Chakraborty and her family members were involved in abetting his son's suicide.

Subsequently, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In August 2020, the CBI took over the investigation and issued a lookout circular against both Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik Chakraborty in connection with the case.

Earlier, in September the High Court temporarily suspended the lookout circular that had been issued against Showik Chakraborty, allowing him the opportunity to travel abroad.
