The SC collegium has sent the recommendation to the Central government in the last week of January to make the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court a judge of the Supreme Court. The Collegium in another decision has recommended Justice Sonia Gokani of the Gujarat High Court as the Chief Justice. The Collegium believes that Sonia will prove to be the best Chief Justice.

The special thing is that Justice Sonia's retirement is on 25 February. Her name was recommended on February 9. Even if the government takes a decision with lightning speed and stamps her name on Monday (February 13), she will be able to stay in office only for 12 days. That is, after 12 days, when she will retire, the collegium will again have to send a recommendation to the government to appoint one of the judges from the list as chief justice.

The collegium took decision considering her seniority. She is the senior most Judge of Gujarat High Court. She became judge of the High Court of Gujarat on 17 February 2011.

On January 31, 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium had sent a recommendation to the government to make Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Arvind Kumar a judge of the Supreme Court. The central Government has notified the names of Justice Arvind Kumar on 10th Feb and he will take oath on Monday the 13th Feb, 2023. The collegium has recommended the name of Sonia Gokani to the government so that the post of the Chief Justice of the High Court does not remain vacant in his absence. At present, her recommendations is pending with the government.

The Collegian wrote in its recommendation that after taking all aspects into consideration, it feels that Sonia Gokani is the best candidate for the post of Chief Justice. Many more positive messages will also be sent by she becoming the Chief Justice. She is one of the finest personality in Judiciary.
