On January 23, the CBI's petition challenging the Bombay High Court order granting bail to former Maharashtra home minister and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh in a corruption case involving allegations of illegal gratification from bar owners and corruption in police transfers and postings in Maharashtra was dismissed by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice V Ramasubramanian, and JB Pardiwala.
The bail granted in the PMLA case was upheld, the Chief Justice of India informed Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta at the commencement. The petition was then summarily dismissed by the bench. The bench explicitly said that the observations made by the High Court are limited to the issuance of bail and will not affect the trial while dismissing the petition.
Since his detention on November 2, 2021, Deshmukh has been in police custody. The former Home Minister was granted bail by the Bombay High Court in a money laundering case in October 2022, which the Supreme Court refused to overturn. Deshmukh, however, remained in custody as a result of the CBI case.
