Justice Joymalya Bagchi Sworn in as Supreme Court Judge

Justice Joymalya Bagchi was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court today, following the Central government's approval of his elevation earlier this week.

The Supreme Court collegium, comprising Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Abhay S. Oka, and Justice Vikram Nath, noted that no judge from the Calcutta High Court had ascended to the position of Chief Justice of India since Justice Altamas Kabir’s retirement on July 18, 2013.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. He was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021, before being repatriated to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021, where he has been serving since.

With over 13 years of experience as a High Court judge, Justice Bagchi currently ranks 11th in the all-India seniority list of High Court judges, including Chief Justices. Throughout his tenure, he has gained extensive expertise across various branches of law.
