The High Court of Punjab & Haryana has rejected the bail requests of two individuals involved in the February attack on Ajnala police station, emphasizing that no citizen should be permitted to assault officials on duty.
On February 23, a mob, led by Amritpal Singh, the chief of Waris Punjab De, violently attacked the police station. The mob, armed with sharp-edged weapons, not only caused injuries to senior police officials, including those up to the rank of superintendent of police but also vandalized government property.
Justice Kuldeep Tiwari's bench at the high court heard the bail pleas of Bhupinder Singh and Ajaypal Singh, both accused by the police. The court stressed that, based on the strength of an unruly mob, no citizen should be allowed to interfere with the administration of justice or cause harm to public authorities carrying out their duties. The bench urged the trial court to expedite the trial process.
The accused argued that they had been in custody for eight months. They claimed a delay in the registration of an FIR and contested that their presence at the scene had not been established.
The court acknowledged that, following the violent attack, a substantial operation was conducted by the police and central government forces. Amritpal Singh, also implicated in the FIR, was arrested and is currently held in Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act.
The court noted specific allegations against the two accused, stating that they had breached police barricades and inflicted injuries on police personnel. Considering the seriousness of the offenses, the court dismissed both bail pleas, stating that the eight-month incarceration alone was insufficient grounds for their release.
