Press conference was most unfortunate incident in the history of Supreme Court: Former CJI Bobde

Former Chief Justice of Supreme Court Sharad Arvind Bobde said on Saturday that working as CJI is a big responsibility. He said that 'being the CJI of the Supreme Court is an important responsibility. There is a lot of competition in the courts. Everyone wants to win their case.

Justice Bobde spoke openly while participating in the India Today Conclave. Regarding the influence of politics on the decisions of the Supreme Court, he said that the word politics can be associated with anyone. Referring to several important decisions, he said that 'there was nothing political in Rafale's case, it was a defense deal'. The issue of Ayodhya was going on since before independence. None of it was political, there was just the fact that politicians talk about it.

He said that as courts, we never get involved in politics. Justice Bobde also spoke on the allegations of Supreme Court lawyer Dushyant Dave, in which Dave had alleged that the Supreme Court is afraid of PM Modi. He said that I would not like to react to his views.

On the allegations of bench-fixing, Justice Bobde said that the press conference was the most unfortunate incident in the history of the Supreme Court. I tried hard to stop him. However, some people have already written about my alleged role in it (the press conference). I would not have done it by myself.

Let us tell you that on January 12, 2018, Justice J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Kurian Joseph and Madan Lokur held a press conference. In which he raised questions on the functioning of the then CJI Deepak Mishra. He had alleged that Justice Mishra used to assign important matters to junior judges.

Talking about the release of those arrested after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Justice SA Bobde said that the case files were not intentionally withheld. During that time the Corona epidemic had spread, then hundreds of cases were pending before us and the judges were not present.

Talking about the farmer's movement against the agricultural laws, he said that we saw in the news people and the police clashing and attacking in the Red Fort on Republic Day. That's when I thought of going to the government and banning the agricultural laws. I talked to my colleagues and we decided to ban the agricultural laws. There was nothing political in this.
