Today, the Supreme Court declined to consider a petition that sought the establishment of a permanent expert committee at the district level to evaluate pollution levels.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said it was purely a policy matter.
"Do you think pollution is going to end if we have committees all over districts across the country," the bench also comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said.
When the bench expressed disinclination to entertain the matter, the petitioner's counsel opted to withdraw the Public Interest Litigation (PIL), resulting in the dismissal of the case upon withdrawal.
The Supreme Court was in the process of reviewing a petition submitted by Ajay Narayanrao Gajbahar, in which he was requesting directives for the establishment of a permanent expert committee at the district level to assess pollution.
